There are 18 AVA’s (An American Viticultural Area is a designated wine grape-growing region in the United States) in Sonoma County, and our favorite AVA’s to visit for winetasting are Alexander Valley, Dry Creek Valley, and Russian River Valley.

• Alexander Valley
  • Alexander Valley is home to 43 wineries and dozens of multi-generational winegrowing families. The mornings and evenings are brisk here with a mid-day heat that ripens the crop, while the brisk air preserves the acidity,  making it a fine place for big varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon.

• Bennett Valley
  • Bennett Valley is one of the smallest appellations in Sonoma. It overlaps both Sonoma Mountain and the Sonoma Coast. Because the soil is clay-like and the air is cold, the grapes hang onto the vines for longer, making it an ideal climate for varietals like Syrah, Merlot, and Chardonnay.

• Carneros – Sonoma
  • Obtaining AVA status in 1983, this appellation was the first to be characterized by climate rather than political boundaries. The cold weather is excellent for varietals such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

• Chalk Hill
  • Chalk Hill lies in the northeast part of Russian River Valley AVA, making it a sub-appellation. The difference between the Russian River Valley and Chalk Hill is that Chalk Hill is warmer, with light breezes and less fog. The name comes from its chalk-like soil, one of the distinctions between it and the Russian River Valley.

• Dry Creek Valley
  • Dry Creek Valley is home to rock soils that drain well, stressing the vines late in the growing season and producing character. It’s an excellent environment for Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc, as well as Bordeaux and Rhone varietals. 

• Fort Ross – Seaview
  • Fort Ross is high in elevation and is heavily influenced by the Pacific Ocean. The location proves challenging for some growers, but it’s crisp air and sunshine creates enough stress for varietals like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

• Fountaingrove District
  • Fountaingrove is the smallest, with only 600 acres and an average vineyard size of 12 acres, most family-owned. This inland AVA combines hillside vineyards, marine influences, and volcanic soils to lend unique flavors to its varietals.

• Green Valley of Russian River Valley
  • Green Valley is located in the southwestern Russian River Valley. Sebastopol, Forestville, and Occidental surround it. This AVA is the most consistent of any North Coast appellation in soil, climate, and flavor. 

• Knights Valley
  • Knight Valley is one of the most off-the-grid AVA’s in Sonoma County, only accessed by Highway 128 through rugged terrain. It’s known for varietals, including Bordeaux varietals, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc.

• Moon Mountain
  • They were established in 2013. the appellation is located within the Sonoma Valley AVA, but winegrowers and vintners have anticipated their AVA status to recognize their high elevation wines on labels.

• Northern Sonoma
  • Northern Sonoma encompasses Alexander Valley, Chalk Hill, Dry Creek Valley, Knights Valley, Russian River Valley, and most of Green Valley. Its north boundaries are Lake County and Mendocino County, and it runs through Sebastopol, Camp Meeker, Occidental, and Freestone. It also traverses the Sonoma and Napa borders.

• Petaluma Gap
  • It was established in 2017. This area produces smaller vineyard yields, boasting wonderful flavor and fruit characteristics. As inland valley air warms, it pulls the cold coastal air into the coastal range mountains and is defined by its wind and fog. 

• Pine Mountain – Cloverdale Peak
  • This area is defined by its steep topography, high elevations, and mountainous soils. It overlaps part of Alexander Valley AVA and Northern Sonoma AVA but only grows 230 acres of commercial vineyards. 

• Rockpile
  • Rockpile is located on the north end of Dry Creek Valley. It is west of Lake Sonoma and reaches the border of Mendocino County. Rockpile is too high in elevation for fog to influence it like many other Sonoma Appellations, so the warmth and sunshine boost the grapes’ ripeness and richness. Because of this, it’s great to grow full-bodied, red varietals here. 

• Russian River Valley
  • Russian River Valley is defined by it’s cooling fog and temperatures, dropping temperature in the evening. This naturally allows grapes to develop full flavor maturity over a longer growing season, up to 15  – 20% longer than its neighboring AVAs.

• Sonoma Coast
  • The  Sonoma Coast AVA is massive, extending from Mendocino County to San Pablo Bay. Its heavy rains and cooler temperatures define it compared to other parts of Sonoma County. This makes it a great area to grow varietals, such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah.
• Sonoma Mountain
  • Sonoma Mountain is located within the Sonoma Valley AVA but is defined by its high-altitude, steep-sloped vineyards. It’s exposure to the east to catch sunshine during the day, and well-drained soils and crevasses in the mountains create distinct varietals including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel.

• Sonoma Valley
  • The Mayacamas and Sonoma Mountains border Sonoma Valley. Sonoma Mountain protects the valley from the calm influence of the Pacific Ocean. This helps prevent excessive rainfall. When cold air does arrive in Sonoma Valley, it’s from Los Carneros and the Santa Rosa Plain. The soils are extremely varied, between the valley floor and mountain soils. Rather than the composition of the ground, the structure has been the deciding factor on where to plant grapes.
